John Fulcher Visit

On 14th November 2007 we had a visit from John Fulcher and his son Paul. John is now 85 years old and lives in West Wittering. He was billeted in Aynhoe Park during WW2 when he was serving in the RASC. He met with members of Aynho History Society and reminisced about village life during the war. Later, John visited Aynhoe Park where he met James Perkins. Following this he toured Rylands Hill Wood, where much of the RASC activity was centred.

A number of photographs were taken, including:

Background

One of the items highlighted in the Village Survey 2002 was the need to research our history and preserve it for future generations through a village historical society.

In June this year an inaugural meeting of Aynho Historical Society was held. Deborah Hayter, an experienced local historian, made a presentation and it was decided initially to research four items of local history and prepare short reports for a further meeting to be held in July. The subjects were:
Collation of existing data & sourcesBrian Reynolds
Aynho War MemorialBrian Croft
Tunnels in and around AynhoJimmy Guthrie
Old roads linking with AynhoColin Macklin

These short presentations were made at a meeting in the Village Hall on 4th July. Many old photographs and documents were also presented. It became clear that further research In each of the above areas is required and this will continue throughout the summer. The results will be presented at our next meeting, which will be held in Aynho Village Hall on Wednesday September 26th at 7.30pm.

At this meeting we plan to 'officially' launch Aynho Historical Society and appoint officials and a small committee. Future meetings will be held on the last Wednesday of each month.

The minutes from the July meeting are available here.

This project is being initiated at the request of the village and is for the village. Please give it your support in any way you can. It will be particularly valuable to record the memories of older residents. We have the facilities to do this on audio and film; we can also make copies of any original documents. James Perkins, the owner of Aynhoe Park House, has already given the project his support. Your involvement, directly as a member or indirectly as a provider of information, will help to ensure that Aynho Historical Society is successful.
